Neuroinflammation in Schizophrenia

نویسندگان

چکیده

Schizophrenia is a chronic debilitating mental illness. In many aspects, the neuropathology of schizophrenia closely associated with neuroinflammation, especially microglial activation. Microglial hyperactivity, which characterized by predominant release proinflammatory cytokines serves as basis neuroinflammation hypothesis in schizophrenia. The enhanced inflammatory induce neuronal susceptibility to oxidative stress and trigger, glutamatergic synaptic dysregulation, mesolimbic mesocortical pathways. Many vitro studies, vivo animal evidence, post-mortem examinations, neuroimaging evaluations Positron Emission Tomography (PET), anti-inflammatory antipsychotic use converge upon central role activation common features

Developmental neuroinflammation and schizophrenia.

There is increasing interest in and evidence for altered immune factors in the etiology and pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Stimulated by various epidemiological findings reporting elevated risk of schizophrenia following prenatal exposure to infection, one line of current research aims to explore the potential contribution of immune-mediated disruption of early brain development in the preci...

Neuroinflammation and white matter pathology in schizophrenia: systematic review

BACKGROUND Neuroinflammation and white matter pathology have each been independently associated with schizophrenia, and experimental studies have revealed mechanisms by which the two can interact in vitro, but whether these abnormalities simultaneously co-occur in people with schizophrenia remains unclear. METHOD We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO and Web of Science from inception through ...

Neuroinflammation in schizophrenia-related psychosis: a PET study.

UNLABELLED Schizophrenia is a chronic and disabling brain disease characterized by psychotic episodes with unknown etiology. It is suggested that neuroinflammation plays a role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Neuroinflammation is characterized by the activation of microglia cells, which show an increase in the expression of the peripheral benzodiazepine receptor. The isoquinoline (R)-N...

Increased expression of astrocyte markers in schizophrenia: Association with neuroinflammation.

OBJECTIVE While schizophrenia may have a progressive component, the evidence for neurodegenerative processes as indicated by reactive astrocytes is inconclusive. We recently identified a subgroup of individuals with schizophrenia with increased expression of inflammatory markers in prefrontal cortex, and hypothesized that this subgroup would also have reactive astrocytes. METHOD We measured g...

The extent of diffusion MRI markers of neuroinflammation and white matter deterioration in chronic schizophrenia.

In a previous study we have demonstrated, using a novel diffusion MRI analysis called free-water imaging, that the early stages of schizophrenia are more likely associated with a neuroinflammatory response and less so with a white matter deterioration or a demyelination process. What is not known is how neuroinflammation and white matter deterioration change along the progression of the disorde...
